The basics

What’s a Google Business Profile?

It’s the box with your hours, rating, and map that shows up when someone searches your business name, and most owners have never actually logged in to manage it. Here’s exactly what it is, and how to check whether yours already exists.

In plain English

It’s your free listing on Google Search and Maps.

A Google Business Profile (formerly called “Google My Business”) is the free panel Google shows when someone searches your business by name, or finds you on Maps. It pulls together your hours, address, phone number, photos, star rating, and reviews into one box, before the person ever clicks through to your website.

Same listing, two places

It shows up on Maps too, with the same details.

Search or Maps results, it’s the same underlying profile either way. Update it once and both surfaces reflect the change. Leave it wrong or unmanaged, and that same mistake follows you everywhere Google shows your business.

What catches people off guard

Google can create one for you, without asking.

This is the part a lot of owners don’t know: Google builds profiles automatically from public records, licensing data, other directories, and even edits submitted by random users. That means your business can already be listed, already have reviews, and already be showing wrong hours or an old phone number, even if nobody on your team has ever touched it. The only way to know for sure is to go check.

Four minutes, four steps

How to find out if you already have one.

1

Search your own business on Google

Open Google and search your business name plus your city, e.g. “Maple Street Dental Denver.” Don't search from your own saved bookmark or website; search the way a stranger would.

2

Look for the panel, not just the links

If a box shows up with your hours, phone number, star rating, and a map, that's your Business Profile. On desktop it usually sits on the right. On mobile it sits right at the top, above the regular search results.

3

Check Google Maps directly too

Search your business name inside Google Maps itself. If a pin and listing come up, a profile exists, whether or not anyone from your business ever logged in to claim it.

4

Go to business.google.com and search your name

This is the real test. Go to business.google.com and type your business name into the search box there. Google will tell you flat out: this business is unclaimed, already verified by someone, or waiting on you to confirm ownership.

Unclaimed
Claim this business

business.google.com will tell you plainly: unclaimed, verified by you, or managed by someone else already.

If it’s unclaimed

Claim it and verify ownership. Until you do, Google and anyone passing by can change the details, and you won’t be notified about new reviews or questions.

If someone else manages it

Use Google’s request-access flow from business.google.com. It’s common with old vendors or past employees, and Google has a standard process to prove ownership and take it back.

If it’s already yours

Good, now it’s a matter of keeping it accurate and building reviews steadily. That’s the part that’s easy to let slide, and the part Repveo automates.

FAQ

Common questions about Google Business Profiles.

Is a Google Business Profile the same thing as Google My Business?

Yes. Google renamed “Google My Business” to “Google Business Profile” in 2022 and folded most of the management tools directly into Google Search and Maps. If someone mentions GMB, they mean this.

Does it cost anything to have one?

No. A Google Business Profile is free to claim, verify, and manage. Google makes money on ads that can appear around it, not on the listing itself.

Can Google really create a profile for my business without me doing anything?

Yes, and this is the part most owners don't expect. Google builds profiles automatically from public data: licensing records, other directories, customer-submitted edits, even map data. Your business can show up, get reviewed, and get called before anyone on your team has ever logged in to manage it.

What does it mean if my profile shows up as “unclaimed”?

It means the listing exists and is visible to customers, but no verified owner is managing it. Anyone could, in theory, submit edits to it, and nobody on your end is getting notified about reviews, questions, or incorrect hours.

What if business.google.com says someone else already manages it?

This happens more than you'd think, usually a past employee, an old marketing vendor, or an agency that set it up years ago and never handed over access. Google has a formal request-access flow for exactly this situation, which walks you through proving you're the legitimate owner.

Does my Business Profile replace my website?

No, they do different jobs. Your website is where you control the full story. Your Business Profile is what shows up in the moment someone is deciding whether to call you, visit you, or keep scrolling, usually before they ever click through to your site.

Does this affect whether AI tools like ChatGPT recommend my business?

Increasingly, yes. AI tools lean on the same public signals Google Search does, including your Business Profile details, review volume, and rating. An accurate, active profile is one of the clearest signals you can give both. Our AI visibility guide goes deeper on that connection.
